As Head of the Catalysis Division (before superannuation), I supervised and guided the research activities of about 35 scientists. The total strength of the catalysis division was about 100 persons. Their research activities of the division are broad and cover many areas of catalysis such as fuels, chemicals, green chemistry, environmental catalysis, new materials etc.

Research Interests:

Applied and basic research in: heterogeneous catalysis, petroleum refining, clean fuels, petrochemicals, zeolites and molecular sieves, environmental catalysis, and green chemistry.

Research achievements:

I have been carrying out both basic and applied research in catalysis since 1966 (including Ph.D. research) and have been guiding students for Ph.D since 1986. The basic research has resulted in about 200 publications and the applied research has resulted in about 60 patents (including 20 international), development of catalysts and processes and commercial applications.

The achievements in applied research are listed below.

1.

Development of catalysts for oxidative desulfurization of diesel:
I am present working on catalytic processes for the removal of recalcitrant sulfur compounds from diesel by oxidative methods (Emeritus scientist scheme).
 

2.

Development of catalyst/process for ethane to acetic acid
Catalyst formulations for economic production of acetic acid from ethane have been developed in the lab scale (NMITLI project).
 

3.

Development of catalyst for deep desulfurization of diesel:
A catalyst has been developed for the desulfurization of diesel from 2500 ppm to 50 ppm. The catalyst is under scale-up for commercial evaluation (NMITLI project).

 

 

4.

Manufacture of linear Alkyl benzenes (LAB):
A zeolite catalyst has been developed for the alkylation of benzene with linear olefins for the production of LAB. The catalyst has a relatively long life and is environmentally safe (US Pat. 5,453,553). This is the first application of a zeolite catalyst to replace anhydrous HF in the manufacture of LAB.

A demonstration plant (800 tpa) was operated at Reliance Industries Ltd., Patalganga.

 

 

5.

Production of dihydroxybenzenes:
A process for the conversion of phenol into dihydroxy benzenes in the presence of H 2O 2 and a novel molecular sieve (TS-1) has been developed. The process involves a continous flow, fixed bed reactor making it operationally simple and economical. This is the first process using a fixed a fixed bed system for phenol hydroxylation.

Catalytic dewaxing :
Catalysts/processes for the dewaxing of petroleum oils (diesel to lube) have been developed.

 

 

7.

Reforming catalyst:
A mono-metallic catalyst was developed (in collaboration with IPCL) and commercialized in two Indian refineries. This is the first case of an indigenous catalyst used in a refining operation.

 

 

8.

Cyclohexanone oxime:
A new process in which ammonia, cyclohexanone and hydrogen peroxide are directly reacted to produce the oxime in > 99% yield has been developed.

 

 

9.

FCC catalysts:
Research in the area of fluid cracking catalyst (FCC) in collaboration with IOC.

 

 

10.

FCC additive:
Research in the area of fluid cracking catalyst (FCC) has lead to the development of a medium pore zeolite suitable for use as an additive for increasing propylene and butylene yields.

 

 

11.

Reforming of pyrolysis gasoline:
A new zeolite containing reforming catalyst useful for the reforming of pyrolysis gasoline has been developed. This catalyst reduces the number of steps required for obtaining aromatics from pyrolysis gasoline from the oresent 5-step procedure to a 2-step one (US Pat. 5,141,908).

 

 

12.

Production of caprolactam:
The present process (Beckman rearrangement) involves the use of hazardous conc. H2SO4 generating the less desired byproduct, ammonium sulphate. Two “green” methods for the production of caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime have been investigated, one involving the use of a non-hazardous solid catalyst and another using very dilute sulphuric acid in micellar medium (2 US Patents granted; 5,401,843 (1995) & 5.594,137 (1997)).

Catalyst for formaldehyde production :
I was also a member of the team which developed an indigenous catalyst (to replace an imported one) for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. The catalyst was put into succesful commercial operation in 1992 at Cibatul.
 

15.

Olefins from agro-alcohol:
The transformation of ethyl alcohol, which can be produced from a renewable agricultural source such as biomass, into hydrocarbons is of potential importance to India which has a huge agricultural base and which imports a large amount of petroleum. A catalyst / process for the transformation of alcohol to hydrocarbons has been developed at the bench-scale level.

 

16.

Monometallic reforming catalyst:
A route for the preparation of a monometallic catalyst was developed. The route was adopted to produce commercial volumes of the catalyst and the catalyst was operated successfully in India.
 

17.

Bimetallic reforming catalyst:
I was a member of the team that developed bimetallic reforming catalyst at IIP. The catalyst was successfully operated in a refinery in India.

Consultancy to indutries:

Over the years, I have also served as a consultant to many industries: These include petroleum refineries (BPCL, HPCL), petrochemical manufacturers (GSFC, RIL) and chemical industries (VAM organics, Hindustan Lever, UCIL).

 

Sponsored research:

I have carried out (as Project Leader) numerous sponsored research projects for many industries (Indian and foreign) and governmental organizations.

Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, Madras refineries, United catalysts, FICOM, and Reliance industries.

 

Contributions to education:

I was a Lecturer teaching M.Sc. and B.Sc. students in Chemistry at Loyola College , Madras during 1971 – 1973. At present I am a research supervisor for Ph.D. degree (Chemistry) offered by the Pune and Kolhapur Universities.
